Social Media can be so fun. As a creative person, I love seeing what looks and outfits other people put together.  I know that my friends who may be less-creative agree as well.  The difference is that many times a creative person will use what they see online as inspiration whereas someone who has less creative abilities may use the outfit and literally copy it.  Easy-peasy, cut-and paste.

There are so many influencers out there who are paid by brands to sell items.  Influencers are creatives who are monetizing their creativity.  It’s super smart!  They have the chops to know how to put looks together, they take the time to style and take the perfect picture and write the perfect post that makes you want what they are representing.  Influencers are good at what they do:  influencing!

Think of it like this.  Let’s say you work for a company and your company sells a financial product.  You are responsible for the marketing of that product.  Each day, when you go to work, you are considering who you are trying sell your product to.  You are thinking about what problems your financial product solves and how it is going to help them make better financial decisions.  You use that to think of new ways to make money for your company because, in the end, that is your job.  You may not even USE that financial product yourself.  You are doing what you are paid to do!

Now, fashion influencers LOVE to shop.  They may absolutely LOVE the brands that they are affiliates for.  Likely they do.  But they are getting paid when a purchase is made.  AGAIN, Influencers are important and I’m not shaming them or what they do at all.  But it is an important distinction to be made.  They may receive items for free to try and sell them (doing their job) to make a little money. Brands do NOT pay affiliates if they don’t have a certain number of followers and the right type of followers.

So, why does this matter?

Here’s the thing:  Fashion influencers understand style.  They also know how to manipulate camera angles. And they know how to make things look like FIRE on their bodies! They get you saying “Oh my gosh, I NEED that.  It makes her butt look so damn good!”
How many times have you purchased something you saw an influencer (or a company for that matter) advertise on Social Media?  Likely at least once and maybe even more often than that.  When said item arrived at your doorstep, were you surprised by any of the following:
  • How cheaply it was made
  • The quality (or lack thereof) of the fabric
  • The sizing was not what you were expecting
  • It did NOT make your butt look like the influencer’s butt did 🤣
  • The cut of the garment was completely unflattering

Let’s talk about the “tricks”

Camera Angles.  We all know that things are not always as they seem when it comes to photos.  Images can be manipulated from the start to get to the most flattering view.  Many, many images may be taken to get the the perfect one.  Below, I have attached an image to show how a pose can make all the difference in how something appears in an image.

As you can see in the image, this model just shifted her body to hide any lumps and bumps.  When it comes to photographing clothes, again, it’s art!

Styling matters!  There may be hidden things you aren’t seeing in the post.  There may be clips being used to make an oversized and shapeless item look like it hugs curves in all of the right places.  Fashion tape may be used to keep poor fabrics from curling up or pockets from flapping up or even to keep buttons together that are strained from a garment being too small.

The item may NEVER stay in their closet.  They may do their marketing images and donate or get rid of the piece.  There is no way to know if it is a piece that they truly love or not. It is their JOB to sell it and make it look good in photos.
They understand their Body Type and how to dress it. This is a BIG one. There are many tricks that can be used to draw attention to an area of your body that you want to highlight or away from a part of your body you want to camouflage.

The impact of understanding how to dress your body type cannot be overstated!
