March 12th, 2020. Think back to that day. The day before life shut down. There was uncertainty. What was going to happen now? We had NO IDEA what was going to happen the next day and how long it would last. There was fear of the unknown.
Fast forward to 2023. A lot has changed, but a lot also remains unchanged. There is still uncertainty. Especially now given a potential looming recession. There is still the unknown and the fear of it. But we have ADAPTED. Many of us are working from home still, even if only partially. And that is a comfort many have really come to expect. We have come to expect flexibility and comfort. And that certainly applies to what we wear.
Maybe far back in the waning days of 2019, you wore a suit to work. Maybe your office was Business Casual. Since March 13th 2020, many of these things have changed. We have learned about “Tabletop Dressing”, aka dressing the top of our bodies for Zoom meetings. We have learned that comfort is important as we juggle work and family obligations. And, from that, we don’t want to look back. And, as a Stylist, I will tell you that you shouldn’t. But, I will also tell you that you need to look forward also.
The time has come to redefine what works in our lives as we define who we are with what we wear. After a year of such change externally, INSIDE, we have also changed and we need to take hold of that and embrace it in how we style ourselves. But we need to do so in a way that still allows for us to shine our light and our confidence through what we wear….because it matters whether we think it does or not!
Clothes change lives. You may be side-eyeing me right now, but it is true. As I have shared in a previous post, a person unknowingly makes a judgement about you within 7 seconds of seeing you? Think about that. How do you want to be seen? And more importantly, how do you want to feel? When you get dressed up and put on your makeup and do your hair, there is power in that. THAT is the power of getting dressed! Here is a visual. You have a BIG presentation at work. Do you wear what you wear every day to work? Probably not. You put on your sharpest Power Suit and let that confidence it brings you take you into your presentation.
I’m certain that for those of you who have returned to work, the dress code rules have loosened a bit. Are you allowed to wear sweatpants when you go to the office? Surely not! However, denim or dressy knit pants are now acceptable. And that will likely stay the same. But, you will begin to see people start to level-up their dress at work a bit.
Close your eyes and envision who you want to be in the world we live in now, realistically. How do you see yourself? What do you see yourself wearing? How do you feel in what you wear? How is it you want others to see you? The time has come to make that vision a reality with the way you live your life now.
In my business, I help women figure out how to style themselves for the life they live. I help women to see that you can take atheluxe pieces and make a few tweaks to their styling to wear them at the office just as easily as on the couch. I help women learn how to build a wardrobe from the inside out. I help them to dress in a way that is authentic to them. I would love to help YOU do the same!
Stylishly Yours,
