If you are reading this blog, the chances are pretty good that you have picked up a fashion magazine once or twice in your life.😉 And if you have picked up a fashion magazine, you are going to COMPLETELY relate to what I am sharing today.
As you flip through the magazine, you are likely to see photos from Runway Shows and you have the thought, “Ummm, yeah, no one would EVER walk down the street in that!” For the most part, you would be right. I mean there will ALWAYS be someone that will push the boundaries, right?!
Here’s the thing…trends in Fashion are born from a couple of places: 1. Haute Couture, and 2. Street Style. Today, specifically, we are going to talk about Haute Couture. Per Merriam Webster dictionary, the meaning of Haute Couture is the houses or designers that create exclusive and often trendsetting fashion for women. That, it does.
But how is the average consumer supposed to figure all of this out? You want to wear some trends here and there, but not like THAT!!! Well, here is the good news. If you have a brand that you love, you are likely within their target demographic and the trend has “trickled down” and become more wearable. Designers for brands KNOW their target market and they create their designs with that in-mind. That part makes it really easy for you.
Let’s talk about a few of the trends that are hot right now that may seem questionable to the everyday woman and look at what a translation of that trend might look like.
Oversized Bows
Bows are everywhere right now. While they are enormous when they walk down the runway, you can very easily translate this into the every day by wearing a high waisted pant that has a self-tie and make a bow. You could also wear a blouse that has ties on the neckline and make it into a pretty bow. You can also wear a pretty bow in your hair.
Sheer Fabric
There aren’t many of us that are comfortable with sheer…especially when you see it coming at you bra-free. It’s a lot. This one can be translated in a slightly more bold way by getting a sheer lace top (lace is also on-trend now) or a sheer fabric and just wearing a bra underneath. If wearing only a bra is still a bit out of your comfort zone, put on a skin-tone cami or a cami that matches the sheer fabric. If that is still too much, you can find a blouse that has a small section that shows a peek of skin or has a small sheer panel.
Enormous Pockets
Pockets on the OUTSIDE of your clothes. Say what?! Yes, the pocket game is serious this season. I have to say, I love a good pocket. When I find a dress with pockets, I’m SOLD. This can be made wearable by just having bold pocket details. Maybe you wear a pant or jacket that has a larger kangaroo pocket. Or you can go the cargo pant route to play the pocket game.
Supersized Blazers
Don’t want to look like you were eaten by your Blazer? Yep, that’s not a look I would want to go for either. The 80’s are back, sister! You can take the “supersized” idea and tone it down a bit. A great way to wear this trend is to get a Boyfriend Blazer. These are slightly longer and looser on the body, but will make this trend much easier to digest.
As you can see, if you think about any Runway Trend, you can easily make it wearable by toning it down a degree. Here are a few of my rules for wearing the Trends:
- You don’t want to look like a walking billboard of Trends. Choose one in your outfit and go with it.
- Choose and wear only the Trends that you love. Don’t let someone talk you into wearing something that you feel ridiculous in!
- Make sure that the pieces you choose will stand the test of time. It’s okay to purchase something that is inexpensive and that is constructed to last only one season, but don’t spend lots of money especially if you are going a bit more bold with the trend.
Well, that’s it. If you have questions, I would love to hear from you. Until next week, my friend…
Stylishly Yours,
